The energy classes of a house: here are the benefits

The energy classes of a house indicate the efficiency of the house in terms of energy, water and fuel consumption. Homes with a valid energy class receive less salty bills, as well as saving on consumption and respecting the environment. The energy class is established on the basis of specific parameters and certified by certified professionals. Read on to find out what are the energy classes of a house and how to calculate and improve your own.

What are the energy classes

The energy classes of a house are differentiated into classes from A to G, where the A4 is the most efficient class, while the G is the least efficient. Let’s see in detail what are the consumption for each energy class:

1.    A4: inferiore o uguale a 0,40 kWh per mq;

2.    A3: 0,40-0,60 kWh per mq;

3.    A2: 0,60-0,80 kWh per mq;

4.    A1: 0,80-1 kWh per mq;

5.    B: 31-50 kWh per mq;

6.    C: 51-70 kWh per mq;

7.    D: 71-90 kWh per mq;

8.    E: 91-120 kWh per mq;

9.    F: 121-160 kWh per mq;

10.  G: oltre i 160 kWh per mq;

How is the energy class calculated?

The main elements that determine the calculation of an energy class are:

1. Geometry and exposure;

2. type of plant;

3. mechanical ventilation;

4. Winter heating mode.

Specifically, the energy class of a house is calculated by adding up the individual energy services of the property. It is expressed in kWh/ sqm/ year. The EPA (Energy Performance Certificate) must be drawn up by a non-owner.

Example of how to calculate

Let’s take as an example a 120 sqm apartment located in northern Italy. We consider that the apartment is equipped with independent heating and that between the months of October-March its consumption is 1300 cubic meters, while in summer it is 300 cubic meters.

The calculation to be made is 1300 - (2 x 300) = 700. This result indicates the cubic meters consumed for heating. It must be divided by the surface. In this case, the house is in energy class B.

How to increase energy class

If you want to improve the energy class of your home, it is possible to make energy efficiency measures. The government has provided tax breaks for many of them. Let’s see what they are:

1. Improved thermal insulation;

2. replacement of old fixtures;

3. installation of environmentally friendly heating and cooling;

4. Use of home automation to reduce energy waste.
